Dr Darts Strikes Gold with his PhD

There isn't going to be much let-up this year for Patrick Chaplin as the newly acclaimed ‘Dr Darts’. The recent award of PhD from Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge for his thesis ‘Darts in England 1900-1939 – A Social History’ promises to be a springboard to a very busy year.
Patrick’s dedication and years of research and service to darts has culminated in the accolade of his PhD. His research begun during the 1980s as a hobby but grew into an obsession. In the mid-1990s, he set out on his journey towards a PhD, and on one encounter at the Nodor Head Offices, he shocked the Managing Director, Vince Bluck by telling him that his Nodor 60 Year Anniversary Stickers were actually 3 years too late. Patrick’s research had uncovered that Nodor was selling darts in 1929, making the company the oldest dart equipment manufacturer Worldwide.
The Guardian newspaper described him as ‘eccentric’ and The Sun called him a ‘darts nut.’ The path to his PhD has been a tortuous one. He has racked up many hours at his PC and undertaken a massive amount of research using thousands of sources from all over the world. The UK has proved to be Patrick’s most successful territory but much important data was also found as far a field as the USA, Canada and New Zealand.
Any time you decide on a course of action and finish the job, it’s always a highlight, so completion of his PhD was testament to Patrick’s willpower and dedication to the task and, more especially, to his love of darts. What does it all mean as far as Patrick’s place in world darts is concerned? Well, he’s finished a formal academic study on darts and that's a real achievement to be the World’s only ‘official’ Darts Historian. It's certainly going to be a busy few years for Patrick. A number of darts-related books are planned and his research continues as there is still much more to learn about the history of our great sport. And, who knows, he might even find time to win a match in his local darts league!
Apart from his hectic writing and research schedule, Patrick will be continuing to advise and assist others via his darts consultancy. He will also be keeping in touch with all the great darts events of the world and seeing how much more he can add to our knowledge of the world of darts whilst also undertaking commissioned work for anyone needing a new angle. As the unique NODOR dartboard shows, Patrick can be contacted via his website http://www.patrickchaplin.com/.
NODOR offer our sincere congratulations to Patrick achieving his PhD and for his continuing service to darts.
